The word thought is broadly used. Basically everything that comes to our mind and goes through our head is called thought.
Negative thoughts can be referred to as unhealthy thoughts that do not benefit us in anyway. It is capable of destroying any individual's life.
Chronic negative thinkers complain, they focus on what is wrong, and maybe very quick to come up with excuses not to do something or point out why people including themselves fail.
When an individual is obsessed with negative thoughts, he/she unknowingly instruct the subconscious mind to create a negative life for him/her. As a result of this such individual continues to struggle and go after opportunities that are doomed to fail.
Well this normally occur because you (the individual) have already programmed your subconscious mind to create a negative life. You may think you're just being realistic and that you are looking at things the way they are and don't want to fool yourself. But you only see things in a negative way because that's what you are used to.
